Conquering my mother mountain | Mt. Kulago, The Hummingbird Mountain of Bukidnon

It's already October 2024, we're almost at the end of the year, and here I am, grateful for every experience and moment. Last September 8th, I trekked Mt. Kulago in Impasug-og, Bukidnon—my mother mountain—my first peak. I was with my former workmate, Ate Deccy, and our mutual friends, Ate Rhea and RJ. I was invited by Republica after I posted my birthday camp with LJ last August 2024.

It rained so hard the minute we arrived at the jump-off location. I was scared that we'd never make it to the camp. I prayed to God that He may be forgiving enough to stop the downpour. I was thankful for the guides of Impasug-ong, Bukidnon that day. We crossed the Tagoloan River whilst it was raining. It was easy to trek Mt. Kulago when it was not sunny or too hot.

We pitched our tents and got ready for dinner. The locals set up a bonfire for us to gather and socialize. It was nice talking to different people from all walks of life. We met a talkative guide, a silent one, and more. I got the chance to know Republica and her friends/workmates from SupportZebra. They're not much of a talker but the silence was enough to act as a signal to everyone that it's time to hit the sack.

During the cold hours of 1-3 AM, I finally fell asleep and dreamed of children staring at me and cats too. I was having another lucid dream and this time, I'm glad I woke up. I didn't sleep after that. We instead talked about it and prepared for the hike by 4AM.

After a brief huddle on what to do and who to follow, our team started the hike. It was ascent all the way to the top. I was getting impatient because I could only focus for 30 minutes to 1-hour max. I almost ran out of breath when I reached the peak of deception. I held one of the guide's hands, which became my friend right after. I was gasping for air as I made my way to the top. And there it was, the serene beauty of Mt. Kulago, the beautiful ridges of Impasug-on, and the peace that came with it.

I saw the sunrise and the pain is all worth it. And there was that, I successfully conquered the steep yet breathtaking Mt. Kulago.

I have plans to climb other mountains in Mindanao next year and I do hope I am physically, mentally, and financially ready. ❤️
